Hydraulic mining is a form of mining that uses high-pressure jets of water to dislodge rock material or move sediment. In the placer mining of gold or tin, the resulting water-sediment slurry is directed through sluice boxes to remove the gold. It is also used in mining kaolin and coal.. Freeze-thaw techniques have been used successfully on a small scale to dewater fine clay wastes and sludges. When the wastes are frozen, the water separates from the clay particles and freezes as ice. Upon thawing, the clay particles remain dehydrated and settle as a relatively high-density concentrate from which most of the water can be decanted.
